Video: What Are Millimeter Waves (mmWaves)?

What are millimeter waves (mmWaves)?

Millimeter waves are radio waves between 17.5 GHz to 200+ GHz. They are on the electromagnetic spectrum below the visible light frequencies and are about 10 times higher to 100 times higher in frequency than your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals. Because mmWaves are radio waves, they are human-safe. The special property of mmWaves is that they penetrate most non-metallic packaging materials, like corrugated cardboard, plastics, air packs, wood. This is a unique sensing modality of being human-safe, but still has penetration capability to see inside of containers such as sealed cardboard packages and plastic totes.

What can millimeter wave (mmWave) imaging see?

Have you ever wanted to see inside sealed boxes or closed totes as they move through your operation? Well, now it's possible with ThruWave 3D millimeter wave imaging.  ThruWave mmWave sensors see through non-metallic surfaces such as cardboard, plastic, and wood.  Here is an example.

LEFT:  Example of what an ordinary camera sees when it's looking at a box.  Traditional camera technology can view surfaces of items and sees the outside of the box, not the contents.

RIGHT: This is what a 3D millimeter wave sensor sees when looking at the same box. The box contains bottles of shampoo. You can see the plastic bottles and the plastic spouts. This is a 3D image that was made by a ThruWave millimeter wave sensor, looking right through the corrugated packaging of the box to see the contents inside.
