ThruWave Wins 2021 Best New Innovation, MHI Innovation Awards

ThruWave introduces new millimeter wave (mmWave) imaging solution at ProMatDX and earns top honor of MHI Innovation Award.

ThruWave is proud to announce that our 3D millimeter wave imaging solution has been named Best New Innovation 2021 from the Material Handling Institute.

The Material Handling Institute (MHI) holds annual MHI Innovation Awards in three categories of Best New Innovation, Best Innovation of an Existing Product, and Best IT Innovation based on concept, value, and impact. There were 92 submissions received for the 2021 MHI Innovation Awards with judges comprised of professionals from the material handling and supply chain industry completed the initial vetting process.  To narrow the field, ten finalists were initially chosen as most innovative in each category, followed by the top winner in each category, announced during a keynote session at ProMatDX.

Q& A with ThruWave CEO Pieter Krynauw about MHI Innovation Awards

ThruWave wins Best New Innovation category 2021 MHI Innovation Awards

Why did ThruWave enter the MHI Innovation Awards?

We entered ThruWave into the awards knowing that we have something truly unique and groundbreaking. It is not a common occurrence these days for new sensing technology to be developed and commercialized. We are providing, for the first time ever, a human-safe and cost-efficient way for manufacturers, material handling and logistics operators to see inside of sealed containers that allows them to drive down operational cost, improve safety AND improve quality.

What makes the ThruWave solution so innovative?

The combination of our sensing technology and image reconstruction software forms our core platform. The core platform can be deployed into different industries and end markets by adding the appropriate analytical software module to the platform appropriate for the problem that we are trying to solve. These modules or applications provide the specific insights to our customers and gives the visibility to take appropriate action to optimize their operation. Our ability to sense in a human safe manner and reconstruct images at high speed makes it particularly interesting for logistics and supply chain customers. The modularity and scalability also allow for multiple applications to run on the same core platform greatly impacting the return on investment by solving multiple problems with the same solution.

ThruWave CEO, Pieter Krynauw

What supply chain/material handling problems does ThruWave solve?

Our 3D mmWave solution opens many new avenues to improve business and operational performance from reducing cost and carbon footprint to improving quality and safety. Identifying fill fraction prior to shipping orders allow our customers to plan and optimize packaging and package material. Realtime cube utilization in storage totes provide the opportunity to maximize inventory density. Identifying leaks and broken items in totes or cases allow customers to rectify the situation before shipping product to their next destination. In mail and parcel industries as well as for DC inbound operations contraband or dangerous items can be identified without opening parcels or mail items manually. These are a few supply chain examples where we can help our customers reduce cost AND improve safety, quality, and efficiency without making a tradeoff.

How does ThruWave  compare to solutions currently used?

Our solution is truly unique, and the new sensing technology allows us to solve problems that could not be solved without manual human intervention or through the usage of expensive and potentially health hazardous x-ray equipment, making it either impractical or cost prohibitive in many supply chain applications. In some cases, cameras are deployed today, but they are limited by only being able to see the surface of packages (not inside OR behind) and are greatly exposed in dusty and low/no light conditions. ThruWave is bringing to the table an un-matched solution that will change sensing in the supply chain forever.
